Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a significant obstacle experienced by students and has the potential to hinder participation and academic development. This research aims to (1) identify the learning environment factors that cause speaking anxiety in tenth- grade students of MAN 4 Tangerang, and (2)understand students' perceptions of their speaking anxiety experiences. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, involving 13 student participants selected through purposive sampling and one school counselor for source triangulation. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews, then analyzed using the Colaizzi method. The results showed that student anxiety was caused by three environmental factors: first, the physical environment as a conditional factor, where the classroom layout (U-shape formation) increased the feeling of being conspicuousness; second, the socio-emotional environment as the most dominant factor, triggered by negative interactions (public reprimands from teachers) and mitigated by affective support; third, the academic environment as the peak of anxiety intensity due to evaluative situations (oral/tahfidz exams) and sudden calls. Material preparedness was found to be the most potent internal coping strategy. It was concluded that the root of this phenomenon is the students' internal cognitive perception, namely the "fear of negative evaluation", which is activated by triggers in all three environments, although proactive resilience and self-improvement motivation were also found in the students.

Additional Information: Kecemasan berbicara merupakan hambatan signifikan yang dialami siswa dan berpotensi menghambat partisipasi serta perkembangan akademik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor lingkungan belajar yang menyebabkan kecemasan berbicara pada siswa kelas X MAN 4 Tangerang, dan (2) memahami persepsi siswa tentang pengalaman kecemasan berbicara yang mereka alami. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode fenomenologi, melibatkan 13 partisipan siswa yang dipilih melalui purposive sampling serta seorang guru BK untuk triangulasi sumber. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi dan wawancara mendalam, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan metode Colaizzi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kecemasan siswa disebabkan oleh tiga faktor lingkungan: pertama, lingkungan fisik sebagai faktor kondisional, penataan ruang (formasi letter U) meningkatkan perasaan tersorot (conspicuousness). Kedua, lingkungan sosioemosional sebagai faktor paling dominan, dipicu oleh interaksi negatif (teguran terbuka guru) dan diredam oleh dukungan afektif. Ketiga, lingkungan akademik sebagai puncak intensitas cemas akibat situasi evaluatif (ujian lisan/tahfidz) dan panggilan tiba-tiba. Kesiapan materi (preparedness) ditemukan sebagai strategi koping internal paling ampuh. Disimpulkan bahwa akar dari fenomena ini adalah persepsi kognitif internal siswa, yaitu "ketakutan akan penilaian negatif" (fear of negative evaluation), yang diaktifkan oleh pemicu di ketiga lingkungan tersebut, meskipun ditemukan pula adanya resiliensi dan motivasi perbaikan diri yang proaktif pada siswa.
