Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Show and Tell technique in enhancing the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 14 Kota Serang. A quantitative research method was employed using a quasi-experimental design with random assignment of participants. The population comprised 306 students from eight seventh-grade classes, from which two classes were selected through cluster random sampling: class VII D as the experimental group and class VII E as the control group. The experimental group was taught using the Show and Tell technique, while the control group received instruction through the storytelling technique. Data were collected using pretests and posttests assessed across five criteria: fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension, and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 29. The findings revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean posttest score (80.93) compared to the control group (74.53). The independent samples t-test indicated a significance value of 0.003 (p < 0.05) with a t-count of 3.057, leading to the rejection of H0 and acceptance of Ha. These results showed that the Show and Tell technique significantly and positively improves students’ speaking abilities.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji efektivitas teknik Show and Tell dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas VII di SMPN 14 Kota Serang. Metode penelitian kuantitatif digunakan dengan desain kuasi-eksperimen melalui penugasan acak peserta. Populasi penelitian terdiri atas 306 siswa dari delapan kelas VII, dari mana dua kelas dipilih melalui cluster random sampling: kelas VII D sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan kelas VII E sebagai kelompok kontrol. Kelompok eksperimen diajar dengan menggunakan teknik Show and Tell, sedangkan kelompok kontrol menggunakan teknik storytelling. Data dikumpulkan melalui pretest dan posttest yang dinilai berdasarkan lima kriteria: kelancaran, pelafalan, kosakata, tata bahasa, dan pemahaman, serta dianalisis menggunakan IBM SPSS versi 29. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kelompok eksperimen memperoleh nilai rata-rata posttest yang lebih tinggi (80,93) dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol (74,53). Uji independent samples t-test menunjukkan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,003 (p < 0,05) dengan t-hitung 3,057, sehingga H0 ditolak dan Ha diterima. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik Show and Tell berpengaruh secara signifikan dan positif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa.
