Abstract
This study aimed to find out to what extent hearing impairment can be some problems for the teacher in teaching English to hearing-impaired students, as well as teacher’s strategies at SKhN 1 Pembina Pandeglang. The researcher employed a case study design for the qualitative research method. The instruments used included observations, interviews, and documentation. The participant involved in this study was an English teacher who was able to teach English to hearing-impaired students in grade 12th and communicate with their students through sign language. The findings of this study showed the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English to hearing-impaired students, including a lack of vocabulary, students not making complete sentences in English, a lack of qualified teacher in teaching English, and hearing-impaired students having short memories. Additionally, the researcher found the strategies used by the teacher in teaching English to hearing-impaired students involved Maternal Reflective Method (MRM), total communication, and using digital media. The Maternal Reflective Method was found to be particularly beneficial, as it helped students build confidence, improved their vocabulary understanding through the use of their mother tongue, and encouraged natural communication between teacher and students. In conclusion, these strategies proved to be effective in supporting the English learning process for students with hearing impairment. Peneliti menggunakan desain studi kasus untuk metode penelitian kualitatif. Alat yang digunakan meliputi observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Peserta yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini adalah seorang guru bahasa Inggris yang mampu mengajar bahasa Inggris kepada siswa tunarungu kelas 12 dan berkomunikasi dengan siswa melalui bahasa isyarat. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan masalah yang dihadapi guru dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris kepada siswa tunarungu, termasuk kurangnya kosakata, siswa tidak dapat membuat kalimat lengkap dalam bahasa Inggris, kurangnya guru yang berkualitas dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris, dan siswa tunarungu memiliki ingatan yang pendek. Selain itu, peneliti menemukan strategi yang digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris kepada siswa tuna rungu meliputi Metode Reflektif Maternal (MRM), komunikasi total, dan penggunaan media digital. Metode Reflektif Ibu ditemukan sangat bermanfaat, karena membantu siswa membangun kepercayaan diri, meningkatkan pemahaman kosakata mereka melalui penggunaan bahasa ibu, dan mendorong komunikasi alami antara guru dan siswa. Kesimpulannya, strategi-strategi ini terbukti efektif dalam mendukung proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bagi siswa dengan gangguan pendengaran.
