Abstract
Bucephalandra motleyana (Brownie) is an aquatic ornamental plant endemic to Kalimantan with high economic value and is widely used in aquascaping. However, its natural population is declining due to overexploitation and the lack of scientific data on optimal cultivation techniques. This study aims to evaluate the effect of water height on the growth of Bucephalandra motleyana and determine the most favorable water level condition for its optimal development. The research was conducted over a period of 30 days at the Aquaculture Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three water height treatments: (1) fully submerged, (2) half submerged, and (3) moist substrate without standing water. Each treatment was replicated four times. Observed parameters included leaf number and length, plant height, root number and length, plant biomass, shoot formation, and cross-sectional anatomy of leaves, stems, and roots. Environmental factors such as light intensity, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO) were also measured to support the analysis. The results indicated that the half-submerged treatment significantly promoted better growth across most parameters, including increases in leaf number, leaf length, plant height, root length, biomass, and shoot emergence. Anatomical observations revealed that plants in the half-submerged treatment had better developed vascular tissues (xylem and phloem), indicated by larger vascular bundle diameters compared to other treatments. Environmental conditions during the study remained within optimal ranges, with pH being the only parameter showing significant differences among treatments. In conclusion, water height has a significant effect on the growth of Bucephalandra motleyana, with the half-submerged treatment yielding the most optimal results. For successful cultivation, it is recommended to use a half submersion system with nutrient-rich substrate and stable humidity. Further research is suggested to investigate the effects of light intensity and specific nutrient formulations on plant growth and vascular tissue development.

| Additional Information: | Bucephalandra motleyana (Brownie) merupakan salah satu tanaman air hias endemik Kalimantan yang memiliki nilai ekonomi tinggi dan banyak digunakan dalam akuaskap. Namun, ketersediaannya di alam semakin menurun akibat eksploitasi berlebihan dan kurangnya data ilmiah mengenai teknik budidaya yang optimal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh tinggi air terhadap pertumbuhan Bucephalandra motleyana dan menentukan kondisi ketinggian air yang paling sesuai untuk pertumbuhan optimal tanaman ini. Penelitian dilaksanakan selama 30 hari di Laboratorium Budidaya Perairan, Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan tiga perlakuan ketinggian air: (1) penuh terendam (full water), (2) setengah terendam (half water), dan (3) substrat basah tanpa genangan air. Masingmasing perlakuan diulang empat kali. Parameter yang diamati meliputi jumlah dan panjang daun, tinggi tanaman, jumlah dan panjang akar, berat tanaman, pertumbuhan tunas, serta penampang melintang jaringan (daun, batang, akar). Faktor lingkungan seperti intensitas cahaya, suhu, pH, dan DO juga diukur untuk mendukung analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan setengah terendam menghasilkan pertumbuhan terbaik secara signifikan pada sebagian besar parameter, yaitu peningkatan jumlah daun, panjang daun, tinggi tanaman, panjang akar, berat tanaman, dan jumlah tunas. Analisis jaringan tanaman menunjukkan perkembangan xilem dan floem yang lebih baik pada perlakuan ini, ditunjukkan dengan ukuran diameter vaskular yang lebih besar dibandingkan perlakuan lainnya. Kondisi lingkungan selama penelitian berada dalam kisaran optimal untuk pertumbuhan tanaman, namun hanya pH yang menunjukkan perbedaan nyata antar perlakuan. Kesimpulannya, tinggi air berpengaruh nyata terhadap pertumbuhan Bucephalandra motleyana (Brownie), di mana perlakuan setengah terendam memberikan hasil paling optimal. Rekomendasi budidaya ke depan adalah penggunaan sistem perendaman setengah batang dengan substrat kaya nutrien dan kelembapan stabil. Penelitian lanjutan disarankan untuk mengeksplorasi pengaruh intensitas cahaya dan nutrisi spesifik terhadap pertumbuhan dan anatomi jaringan pengangkut tanaman ini. | |||||||||
