Abstract

The demands of education involving the complexity of global problems have not been fully reflected in the learning process in the classroom, especially in encouraging students to criticize socio-scientific issues with in-depth scientific arguments. This activity requires the ability to think and communicate logically, scientifically, and relevant which is reflected in the ability of scientific argumentation orally and in writing. However, these abilities have not developed optimally due to limited teaching materials and supportive learning activities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop alternative teaching materials that are able to bridge these needs. This study aims to determine the level of validity and response of students to E-Magazine-based socio-scientific issues in training the ability of scientific argumentation on the concept of Biotechnology. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE Development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) which is limited to the development stage, namely limited product trials. Data analysis is descriptively quantitative and qualitative through validation sheets and questionnaire responses of students. The results showed that SSI based E-Magazine had a validity rate with an overall average of 96.50% in the “very Valid”category. The assessment came from material experts who obtained a score of 97.04% in the “very Valid” category, media experts obtained 96.27% in the “very Valid” category, and Junior High School science teachers obtained a score of 96.19% in the “very Valid” category. The response rate of students to E-Magazine obtained a percentage score of 91.48% with the category “very good”. This result indicates that the SSI-based E-Magazine can be recommended as a teaching material to train students’ scientific argumentation skills on the concept of biotechnology
