Abstract

This research aims to find out the dominant type of students' motivation in learning English and the reason why the students perceive English is difficult to learn. The researcher used qualitative research approach, specifically case study approach with the data collected through questionnaire on 41 students and in-depth interview with 6 students. Motivation is a critical determinant of language learning success, impacting students' persistence, effort, and ultimate proficiency. The findings reveal the dominant type of the motivation among the students and few difficulties that the students faced when learning English language. The dominant type of motivation among the students is intrinsic motivation. The researcher obtained the result based on the close-ended questionnaire that the researcher gave to the students. It contains 10 intrinsic questions and 10 extrinsic questions. The researcher strengthened the result by doing an open-ended questionnaire with 6 students. Few reasons that the students perceive English is difficult to learn are pronouncing English words correctly, the grammar, and then understanding on the meaning of English sentences. The researcher obtained the result by doing an open-ended questionnaire with 6 students.
