Abstract
This study examines phubbing behavior among Sociology Education students at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University within social interactions both inside and outside the classroom with their peers. The purpose of this research is to explore phubbing in the social interactions of students in the Sociology Education Department. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation with informants consisting of seven phubbing perpetrators (key informants) and seven classmates who were affected (supporting informants). Using Gillin and Gillin’s theory of social interaction, this research analyzes how phubbing influences social contact, communication, and social processes (both associative and dissociative). The findings reveal that phubbing significantly disrupts direct social contact, undermines effective communication by dividing attention and causing miscommunication, and encourages dissociative social processes such as competition for attention and contravention. Moreover, phubbing hinders associative social processes, including cooperation, accommodation, and assimilation, which are essential for harmonious relationships. The conclusion indicates that phubbing creates emotional distance and weakens friendships.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini mengkaji perilaku phubbing di kalangan mahasiswa Pendidikan Sosiologi Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa Dalam Interaksi Sosial di kelas dan di luar kelas dengan teman mahasiswa. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui Phubbing dalam Interaksi Sosial Mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Sosiologi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara mendalam dan dokumentasi dengan informan yang terdiri dari tujuh pelaku phubbing (informan kunci) dan tujuh teman kelas yang terdampak (informan pendukung). Menggunakan teori interaksi sosial Gillin dan Gillin, penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana phubbing memengaruhi kontak sosial, komunikasi, dan proses sosial (asosiatif dan disosiatif) Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa phubbing secara signifikan mengganggu kontak sosial langsung, merusak komunikasi efektif dengan memecah fokus dan menyebabkan miskomunikasi, mendorong proses sosial disosiatif seperti persaingan perhatian dan kontravensi serta phubbing menghambat proses sosial asosiatif termasuk kerja sama, akomodasi, dan asimilasi yang esensial untuk hubungan harmonis. Kesimpulan menunjukkan bahwa phubbing menciptakan jarak emosional dan merenggangkan hubungan pertemanan. | |||||||||
