Abstract

This study aims in analyzing the translation errors of thesis abstracts written by students of Master Program of Indonesian Department of Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Using an content analysis method, this research classifies errors based on Medel (2022) and Nord (2018) theories, identifying four types of errors: inversion of meaning, omission of meaning, addition of meaning, and derivation of meaning, as well as three sources of errors: morphological, lexical, and syntactical aspects.The findings reveal a total of 89 types of errors, consisting of 17 inversions of meaning, 18 omissions of meaning, 8 additions of meaning, and 46 derivations of meaning. Additionally, 179 sources of errors were identified, with 28 stemming from morphological aspects, 68 from lexical aspects, and 83 from syntactical aspects. Altogether, the study identified 268 instances of errors across all categories. These findings were reviewed and validated by two raters: a translation practicioner and an academic expert in linguistic and translation. The discussion highlights how the dominance of syntactical errors reflects the students’ limited comprehension of sentence structure in translation. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of understanding translation skills, particularly in the context of writing thesis abstracts, which require proficiency in both English and Indonesian. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the common issues faced by students in academic writing, particularly in writing thesis abstracts. Then underline the need for greater awareness of the role of translation skills in producing accurate and effective bilingual thesis abstracts.
