Abstract
Brakes are a crucial component in vehicles, functioning to reduce speed or stop the vehicle's motion. Due to this vital role, brakes significantly impact driver safety. However, most brake pads available in the market are predominantly made from asbestos-based materials, which have negative effects on both human health and the environment. Therefore, alternative materials are needed to replace asbestos without compromising brake pad performance. One such alternative being developed is a brake pad made from eggshell powder and bamboo fiber, which possess mechanical properties similar to conventional brake pads. In this study, mechanical tests were conducted on the alternative brake pads, including flexural strength, hardness, and microstructure analysis. Three different volume fractions were tested to determine which variation exhibits the best mechanical properties. Prior to manufacturing, the bamboo fiber underwent alkali treatment using a 5% solution for 2 hours. A cold press machine was used at a pressure of 3 MPa for 60 minutes, followed by a curing process in an oven at 100°C for 1 hour. The finishing process involved grinding to smooth the specimens, which were then subjected to mechanical testing. The results showed that the brake pad with 25% eggshell powder by volume had the best mechanical properties among the tested variations, as determined using the Multi Response Performance Index (MRPI). The average actual test results for the 25% eggshell fraction were: Modulus of Rupture (MOR) 73.408 MPa, Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) 19.205 MPa, hardness 83 Shore D. In addition, samples with this composition also exhibited the highest density compared to other samples.

| Additional Information: | Rem adalah bagian komponen yang sangat penting dalam kendaraan yang berperan untuk mengurangi kecepatan atau menghentikan gerakan kendaraan. Karena itulah komponen ini sangat berpengaruh terhadap keselamatan pengendar namun kapas rem yang beredar dipasaran dominan berbahan dasar asbestos yang memiliki dampak negatif bagi kesehatan manusia serta lingkungan, maka diperlukan bahan alternatif yang dapat menggantikan asbestos tanpa mengurangi kinerja kampas rem, salah satu kampas rem alternatif yang sedang dikembangkan adalah kampas rem dengan cangkang telur dan serat bambu yang memiliki sifat mekanis menyerupai kampas rem konvesional, pada kapas rem alternatif ini dilakukan pengujian mekanis meliputi uji kelenturan, kekerasan dan structur mikro didalamnya, dengan memberikan 3 fraksi volum yang berbeda untuk menemuk variasi mana yang memiliki sifat mekanis terbaik. Sebelum dilakukan proses manufaktur, serat bambu dilakukan perendaman oleh alkali 5% selama 2 jam. Digunakan mesin cold press dengan tekanan 3MPa selama 60 menit dan oven untuk proses curring bertemperatur 100 ͦ C selama 1 jam. Proses finishing menggunkan amplas gerinda untuk meratakan spesimen yang telah di potong lalu dilakukan pengujian mekanis berupa kelenturan, kekerasan dan strusktur mikro dari hasil pengujian didapatkan nilai vraksi cangkang telur 25% memiliki nilai yang baik diantara vraksi volum lain nilai ini didapatkan dengan menggunkan multi response performance index. Didapatkan nilai rata rata pengujian actual pada vraksi cangkang telur 25%, MOR 73,408 MPa, MOE 19,205 MPa, kekerasan 83 shore D dan sampel uji dengan komposisi serbuk cangkang telur menunjukkan kerapatan yang paling baik dibandingkan dengan sampel uji lainnya. | ||||||
