Abstract
Women’s representation in mass media remains heavily influenced by patriarchal biases that reduce their roles and positions. Horror films, as one of Indonesia’s most popular media genres, often depict women not only as the center of terror but also as subjects of gender-based injustice. Anggy Umbara, a leading commercial horror director with a wide audience, demonstrates recurring patterns in portraying women across his films. This study examines how women are positioned and how audiences are guided to perceive women in four horror films directed by Anggy Umbara—Suzzanna Bernapas dalam Kubur (2018), Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (2019), Siksa Neraka (2023), and Munkar (2024). The research employs a qualitative method using Sara Mills’ model of critical discourse analysis within the critical paradigm. Findings reveal that women are placed in unequal power relations, objectified as sexual and visual commodities, victimized through violence and suffering, marginalized, and depicted as frightening mystical beings. Audiences are directed to normalize inequality, consume women’s suffering, absorb patriarchal values, and perceive women as threats. These results indicate that Anggy Umbara’s horror films function not merely as entertainment but also as agents in reproducing patriarchal ideology in how women are viewed.

| Additional Information: | Representasi perempuan dalam media massa masih kerap dipengaruhi bias patriarki yang mereduksi peran dan posisi perempuan. Film horor, sebagai salah satu media populer di Indonesia, sering menghadirkan perempuan bukan hanya sebagai pusat teror, tetapi juga sebagai objek ketidakadilan gender. Anggy Umbara, sebagai salah satu sutradara horor komersial dengan penonton yang luas, menunjukkan pola-pola tertentu dalam memotret perempuan di filmnya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana perempuan diposisikan dan bagaimana penonton diarahkan untuk memandang perempuan dalam empat film horor karya Anggy Umbara—Suzzanna Bernapas dalam Kubur (2018), Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (2019), Siksa Neraka (2023), dan Munkar (2024). Kajian dilakukan dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan analisis wacana kritis Sara Mills dalam paradigma kritis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perempuan ditempatkan dalam relasi kuasa yang timpang, diobjektifikasi sebagai komoditas seksual dan visual, dijadikan korban kekerasan dan penderitaan, dimarjinalkan, serta ditampilkan sebagai sosok mistis yang menakutkan. Penonton diarahkan untuk menormalisasi ketimpangan, mengonsumsi penderitaan perempuan, menyerap nilai patriarki, dan melihat perempuan sebagai ancaman. Temuan ini memperlihatkan bahwa film horor Anggy Umbara tidak sekadar hiburan, tetapi turut mereproduksi ideologi patriarki dalam memandang perempuan. | ||||||
