Abstract
One of the many important components for students is reading, especially reading comprehension. This is because students with good reading comprehension skills will find it easier to digest and understand the information and meaning of a text. However, in reality, students reading comprehension skills are relatively low, one of the causes being the use of inappropriate teaching methods. Therefore, this study aims to apply the SQ4R method and the jigsaw method to determine the impact of these two methods on students reading comprehension skills when reading news articles in seventh grade at SMPN 7 Pasar Kemis. This study employs an experimental method with a quantitative approach, designed as a quasi-experimental study using a non-equivalent control group design and implementing a pretest-posttest pattern. The research population consisted of all seventh-grade students at SMPN 7 Pasar Kemis, comprising six classes, among them are VII A, VII B, VII C, VII D, VII E, and VII F, with a total of 254 students. The research sample consisted of class VII E as the experimental class with 42 students and class VII F as the control class with 41 students, determined using purposive sampling technique. The pretest and posttest data obtained from the research sample were then processed using statistical analysis software. The statistical calculations showed that the average posttest score for the SQ4R learning method was 82.90, categorized as B “Good,” and the average posttest score for the jigsaw learning method was 73.71, categorized as C “Fair”. Furthermore, the use of the SQ4R method has an effect on students' reading comprehension abilities. This statement is supported by the results of the t-test calculation, which shows a calculated t-value of 7.472 and a critical t-value of 2.019. Since the calculated t-value is greater than the critical t-value (7.472 ≥ 2.019), based on the decision-making criteria established in this study, it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. These findings indicate that the use of the SQ4R method is effective and has a more significant impact than the jigsaw method in improving students reading comprehension of news texts in grade VII at SMPN 7 Pasar Kemis. | Additional Information: | Satu dari sekian banyak komponen yang penting bagi siswa ialah membaca, khususnya membaca pemahaman. Hal tersebut terjadi, karena siswa dengan kemampuan membaca pemahaman yang baik akan lebih mudah mencerna dan memahami informasi serta makna sebuah bacaan. Namun, pada realitanya kemampuan membaca pemahaman siswa tergolong rendah, salah satu penyebabnya yaitu penggunaan metode pembelajaran yang kurang tepat. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini mencoba menerapkan metode SQ4R dan metode jigsaw untuk mengetahui pengaruh dua metode tersebut terhadap kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks berita pada siswa kelas VII SMPN 7 Pasar Kemis. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen dengan pendekatan kuantitatif yang dirancang sebagai penelitian quasi experimental dengan desain non-equivalent control group design dan menerapkan pola pretest-posttest. Populasi penelitian yang digunakan adalah seluruh siswa kelas VII SMPN 7 Pasar Kemis yang terdiri dari 6 kelas, di antaranya yaitu kelas VII A, VII B, VII C, VII D, VII E, VII F dengan jumlah 254 siswa dan sampel penelitian terdiri dari kelas VII E sebagai kelas eksperimen dengan jumlah 42 siswa dan VII F sebagai kelas kontrol dengan jumlah 41 siswa yang ditentukan dengan teknik sampling purposive. Data pretest dan posttest yang diperoleh dari sampel penelitian kemudian diolah menggunakan software analisis statistik. Hasil perhitungan statistik memperlihatkan bahwa nilai rata-rata posttest penggunaan metode pembelajaran SQ4R sebesar 82,90 yang berkategori B “Baik” dan nilai rata-rata posttest penggunaan metode pembelajaran jigsaw sebesar 73,71 yang berkategori C “Cukup”. Selanjutnya, penggunaan metode SQ4R berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan membaca pemahaman siswa. Pernyataan tersebut dibuktikan oleh hasil perhitungan uji-t yang menunjukkan nilai thitung sebesar 7,472 dan ttabel sebesar 2,019, artinya thitung lebih besar dari ttabel (7,472 ≥ 2,019), maka berdasarkan kriteria pengambilan keputusan yang telah ditentukan pada penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan H0 ditolak dan H1 diterima. Temuan tersebut, menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan metode SQ4R berpengaruh dan pengaruh yang diberikan lebih signifikan dibandingkan metode jigsaw dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membaca pemahaman teks berita pada siswa kelas VII SMPN 7 Pasar Kemis.
