Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of applying the Direct Instruction method in improving pantomime art skills in deaf children at SKH Negeri 01 Kota Serang. The background of the research is based on the low participation of elementary school students in pantomime learning, which has been dominated by high school students. This condition limits opportunities for elementary school students to develop their artistic talents, even tho pantomime is a highly potential nonverbal communication medium for deaf children to express themselves, train their motor coordination, and build self-confidence. This research uses an experimental method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest design. The research subjects consisted of four deaf students from the 2nd grade of elementary school. The learning procedure was carried out thru the stages of the Direct Instruction method, which included orientation, material presentation, guided practice, independent practice, and evaluation. Data was collected thru observation and pantomime performance tests, which included aspects of movement flexibility, facial expression, coordination of movements, and storytelling delivery. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon test to measure the difference in students' abilities before and after the intervention. The research results show a significant improvement in students' pantomime skills after the intervention. The conclusion of this study is that the Direct Instruction method is effective in improving pantomime art skills in elementary school-aged deaf children. The application of this method is recommended for teachers in special schools to optimize visual and hands-on art learning, in order to optimally develop the non-academic potential of deaf students.
