Abstract

Particle board is an example of repurposing organic waste, utilizing wood residues to form a composite with physical and mechanical properties similar to conventional wood panels. The base materials used include oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers, oil palm fronds, and rambutan wood, which were treated with varying volume fractions—0%, 15%, 30%, and 45%—to assess the impact of rambutan wood on board performance. Physical and mechanical tests were conducted and compared against the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 03-2105-2006. The 0% sample yielded the highest density (0.84 g/cm³), moisture content (8.89%), thickness swelling (10.05%), and water absorption (23.50%). It also showed the best bending strength (MOR) at 225.48 kgf/cm² and elasticity (MOE) at 12.80 kgf/cm². All samples met the physical property standards, while only the 0% and 15% volume fraction samples met the mechanical standard for bending strength. None of the samples met the standard for elasticity.
