Abstract

Kubang Puji Village in Pontang District, Serang Regency, is a coastal area with high potential for blue swimming crabs (Portunus pelagicus). Most of the local population works as blue swimming crab fishers using fishing gear such as naga traps, folding traps, and gill nets. The phenomenon of lost fishing gear, also known as Abandoned, Lost, or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG), poses a serious problem as the lost gear continues to capture marine organisms, resulting in economic losses, environmental damage, and threats to the sustainability of fishery resources. This study aims to identify the causes of gear loss in the blue swimming crab fishery, estimate the number of lost fishing gear units, and develop recommendations to prevent and reduce gear loss in Kubang Puji Village. Data were collected by interviewing 70 respondents with specific criteria from December 2024 to January 2025. Descriptive and statistical analyses and fishbone diagram analyses were used to describe the causes of the ALDFG phenomenon. The study found that the leading causes of fishing gear loss were bad weather (77%), strong ocean currents (76%), snagging on the seabed (36%), gear conflicts (40%), gear theft (36%), gear damage (19%), and operational errors (17%). The estimated number of lost fishing gear units in the blue swimming crab fishery per year ranged from 57 to 1,140.
