Abstract

Climate change has become a major global concern due to its substantial impact on human life and environmental sustainability. One of the main drivers of climate change is greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are influenced by various economic activities, demographic factors, and production processes. This study aims to analyze the effects of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation rate, population size, forest area, the manufacturing industry sector, and livestock production on GHG emissions in eight ASEAN countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, and Myanmar—over the period from 2012 to 2022. The study employs a dynamic panel model using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) Arellano-Bond approach. The results indicate that GDP has a positive effect on GHG emissions in the short term but no significant effect in the long term. Forest area, livestock production, and population size significantly contribute to higher GHG emissions in both the short and long term. Meanwhile, the manufacturing industry has a significant negative impact on GHG emissions, and inflation does not have a significant effect. These findings provide valuable insights for ASEAN countries in formulating sustainable development policies that support environmental conservation.
