Abstract
This study aims to explore how gender and classroom social interaction influence the speaking styles of Generation Z students, with the broader goal of helping teachers better understand and support their students' communication needs. Conducted at MAN 2 Kota Serang, the research focuses on a single eleventh-grade classroom and employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, audio recordings of student interactions, and semi-structured interviews with both male and female students. The data were then transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key patterns and linguistic features in students’ speech. The findings reveal that female students tend to speak in a more structured, expressive, and polite manner, often characterized using lexical hedges, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, and highly polite expressions—aligning with Lakoff’s theory of female language. In contrast, male students typically use a more spontaneous and direct speaking style, consistent with Coates’ perspective on male speech. Their language often includes minimal responses, topic initiation, and the use of taboo language. In addition to gender, students' speaking styles are also shaped by external factors such as social media and their social environment, as seen in the frequent use of slang and code-mixing between English and Indonesian during classroom interactions. These findings provide valuable insights for educators in designing more relevant and responsive language teaching strategies. By understanding the interplay between gender, classroom dynamics, and digital influence, teachers can better connect with and support Generation Z students in meaningful ways. Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana perbedaan gender dan interaksi sosial di dalam kelas memengaruhi gaya berbicara siswa Generasi Z, dengan tujuan yang lebih luas untuk membantu guru memahami dan mendukung kebutuhan komunikasi siswa secara lebih efektif. Penelitian dilakukan di MAN 2 Kota Serang dengan fokus pada satu kelas XI dan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi kelas, rekaman audio interaksi siswa, serta wawancara semi-terstruktur dengan siswa laki-laki dan perempuan. Seluruh data ditranskripsi dan dianalisis menggunakan analisis tematik untuk mengidentifikasi pola-pola utama dan ciri-ciri linguistik dalam tuturan siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa perempuan cenderung berbicara dengan cara yang lebih terstruktur, ekspresif, dan sopan, ditandai dengan penggunaan lexical hedges, tag questions, intonasi naik, empty adjectives, dan ungkapan yang sangat sopan, sesuai dengan teori bahasa perempuan oleh Lakoff. Sebaliknya, siswa laki-laki lebih sering menunjukkan gaya bicara yang spontan dan langsung, selaras dengan perspektif Coates mengenai bahasa laki-laki. Tuturan mereka umumnya mencakup respons minimal, penginisiasi topik, serta penggunaan bahasa tabu. Selain faktor gender, gaya berbicara siswa juga dipengaruhi oleh faktor eksternal seperti media sosial dan lingkungan sosial, yang tercermin dalam penggunaan bahasa gaul serta code-mixing antara bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia dalam interaksi kelas. Temuan ini memberikan wawasan yang penting bagi pendidik dalam merancang strategi pengajaran bahasa yang lebih relevan dan responsif. Dengan memahami keterkaitan antara gender, dinamika kelas, dan pengaruh digital, guru dapat membangun koneksi yang lebih bermakna dengan siswa Generasi Z serta mendukung perkembangan kemampuan berbahasa mereka secara lebih optimal.
