Abstract
The study examines the instructional methods and strategies employed by a proficient IELTS teacher and explores how teacher cognition, covering the teacher’s beliefs, knowledge, and attitudes, shapes these instructional practices. It provides insights into teaching practices in an Indonesian (South Jakarta) private test preparation institution context. The methods used in this qualitative study were classroom observations and structured interviews with the teacher in an online class setting. A thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns and themes in the data, revealing that the teacher employed a blend of direct, adaptive, and interactive teaching methods. These methods were complemented by strategies such as test-taking skills, test-wiseness skills, and the additional strategies (practice tests, vocabulary building, and grammar points). Adaptive strategies tailored lessons to student needs individually, while interactive activities fostered collaboration and engagement. The findings highlight the pivotal role of teacher cognition in underlying the teacher's decision when choosing the instructional models to be used in class. These cognitive dimensions informed a cohesive instructional approach, balancing structure, flexibility, and students-centred learning. The study indicates that effective IELTS listening preparation requires integrative pedagogical practices that combine explicit test-related strategies with adaptive and interactive elements.

Additional Information: | Studi ini mengkaji metode dan strategi pengajaran yang digunakan oleh seorang guru IELTS yang kompeten dan mengeksplorasi bagaimana kognisi guru, yang mencakup keyakinan, pengetahuan, dan sikap guru, membentuk praktik pengajaran tersebut. Studi ini memberikan wawasan tentang praktik pengajaran dalam konteks lembaga persiapan tes swasta di Indonesia (Jakarta Selatan). Metode yang digunakan dalam studi kualitatif ini adalah observasi kelas dan wawancara terstruktur dengan guru dalam kelas daring. Analisis tematik diterapkan untuk mengidentifikasi pola dan tema dalam data, yang mengungkapkan bahwa guru menggunakan perpaduan metode pengajaran langsung, adaptif, dan interaktif. Metode-metode ini dilengkapi dengan strategi seperti keterampilan mengerjakan tes, keterampilan memahami tes, dan strategi tambahan (tes latihan, pengembangan kosakata, dan poin tata bahasa). Strategi adaptif menyesuaikan pelajaran dengan kebutuhan siswa secara individual, sementara aktivitas interaktif mendorong kolaborasi dan keterlibatan. Temuan ini menyoroti peran penting kognisi guru dalam mendasari keputusan guru ketika memilih model pengajaran yang akan digunakan di kelas. Dimensi kognitif ini membentuk pendekatan pengajaran yang kohesif, menyeimbangkan struktur, fleksibilitas, dan pembelajaran yang berpusat pada siswa.
