Abstract
The rapid advancement of technology has significantly influenced the film industry, particularly with the rise of digital streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Viu, and Amazon Prime, which offer a wide variety of film genres. Documentary films, categorized as educational media, intentionally provide audiences with the opportunity to critically engage with and understand contemporary social phenomena. This study focuses on the documentary The Social Dilemma by Jeff Orlowski, which explores the dark dimensions of social media, including surveillance, data harvesting, and the exploitation of personal information by major global media and technology corporations. Given the sensitive nature of these issues, it is essential to analyze how the film constructs its narrative to avoid potential bias. Using Todorov’s narrative analysis framework combined with a qualitative research approach, this study aims to examine the narrative representation of personal data exploitation in social media within the film. The research findings indicate that, (1) The initial condition involves the introduction of key figures and the main issue in the film The Social Dilemma; (2) The disruption arises from the use of AI as a tool to exploit users’ personal data; (3) Awareness of this disruption is reflected in the creators’ realization that they have built something that now manipulates them; and (4) Efforts to address the disruption include the potential implementation of regulations governing user data. These findings suggest that documentary films serve as an effective medium for delivering criticism of modern technological practices and for fostering digital awareness in society.

| Additional Information: | Pesatnya perkembangan teknologi saat ini membawa dampak signifikan pada dunia perfilman. Hal ini terlihat dari maraknya platform streaming digital seperti Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Viu, dan Amazon Prime yang menyajikan berbagai genre film. Salah satunya film dokumenter yang termasuk dalam genre film edukatif, karena secara sadar memberikan ruang kepada penonton untuk memahami fenomena yang terjadi. Contohnya pada film dokumenter The Social Dilemma karya Jeff Orlowski, yang mengangkat isu mengenai sisi gelap media sosial, seperti praktik pengawasan, perekaman, dan eksploitasi data pribadi oleh perusahaan media dan teknologi besar dunia. Oleh karena itu, penting untuk menganalisis bagaimana narasi dibentuk dalam film ini agar tidak menimbulkan bias terhadap isu yang diangkat. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana eksploitasi data pribadi dalam media sosial dinarasikan dalam film The Social Dilemma dengan menggunakan metode analisis naratif Todorov dan pendekatan kualitatif. Dan hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, (1) Kondisi awal berupa pengenalan tokoh dan topik permasalahan dalam film The Social Dilemma; (2) Gangguan muncul akibat penggunaan AI sebagai alat eksploitasi data pribadi pengguna; (3) Kesadaran akan gangguan terlihat dari refleksi pencipta yang telah menciptakan sesuatu yang memanipulasinya sendiri; dan (4) Usaha memperbaiki gangguan yaitu dapat diberlakukannya aturan atau regulasi atas data pengguna. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa film dokumenter merupakan medium yang efektif dalam menyampaikan kritik terhadap praktik teknologi modern serta membangun kesadaran digital di masyarakat. | ||||||
