Abstract

APEC is a regional economic cooperation forum that covers more than 38% of the world's population and 56% of global GDP, and accounts for about 60% of the world's carbon emissions. With rapid economic growth and industrialization, APEC has a strategic role in climate change mitigation, in line with the commitment to net-zero emissions 2050-2060 and the achievement of SDGs 13 (Climate Action). This study aims to analyze the influence of economic factors on CO₂ emissions in 18 APEC countries for the period 2015-2022, using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) method. Independent variables include gross domestic product per capita, exports, industrial sector value added, foreign investment, and population. Results show that GDP per capita and population have a negative and significant effect on CO₂ emissions in both the short and long term. Industrial value added has a positive and significant effect in both timeframes. Foreign investment is positive and significant in the short term, but insignificant in the long term. Exports have a positive but insignificant effect in both time horizons. CO₂ emissions in the previous year also have a significant positive effect. Simultaneously, all independent variables affect CO₂ emissions in 18 APEC countries. Therefore, emission reduction strategies should focus on improving industrial efficiency and applying more selective criteria for foreign investment. Governments should also promote green economic growth and strengthen urban management to support long-term climate targets.
