Abstract

The application of the Audio Lingual learning method is an activity that is presented not only in a short training scheme, but also in various dialogs that must be listened to, repeated and memorized by the learners. The research with this study aims to (1) Find out the application of Audio Lingual Method (ALM) in developing the English language skills of learners at PEC course institution in West Jakarta City (2) Find out the English language skills of learners at PEC course institution in West Jakarta City after using Audio Lingual Method (ALM). In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method, with data collection techniques through observation, interview, and documentation. The informants in this study were 1 branch head as well as tutor, 1 receptionist as well as tutor, 2 teachers, and 11 learners at PEC course institution in West Jakarta. The results of this study show that the application of the Audio Lingual method at PEC course institution can be said to be quite successful because the Audio Lingual method has stages of repetition, drills, memorization, and imitation. Indicators of English language skills achieved by learning citizens consist of listening skills in remembering, understanding, applying, and analyzing and speaking skills in imitative and responsive. From the results of the evaluation applied by the teacher through oral tests, written tests, and action assignment tests to measure the memory of learning citizens before and after applying the Audio Lingual Method. Learning citizens have improved memory after being trained by the teacher repeatedly with sound recording media on ‘I don't have’ and ‘about yourself’ material can be seen from the results of written evaluations and also video assignments.

Additional Information: Penerapan metode pembelajaran Audio Lingual merupakan kegiatan yang disajikan tidak hanya dalam skema latihan singkat, tetapi juga dalam berbagai dialog yang harus didengarkan, diulangi dan dihafalkan oleh warga belajar. Penelitian dengan kajian ini bertujuan untuk (1) Mengetahui penerapan Audio Lingual Method (ALM) dalam mengembangkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris warga belajar di lembaga kursus PEC Kota Jakarta Barat (2) Mengetahui kemampuan berbahasa Inggris warga belajar di lembaga kursus PEC Kota Jakarta Barat setelah menggunakan Audio Lingual Method (ALM). Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Informan dalam penelitian ini yaitu 1 kepala cabang sekaligus tutor, 1 resepsionis sekaligus tutor, 2 pengajar, dan 11 warga belajar di lembaga kursus PEC Kota Jakarta Barat. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan metode Audio Lingual di lembaga kursus PEC dapat dikatakan cukup berhasil dikarenakan metode Audio Lingual ada tahapan pengulangan (repetition), latihan (drills), menghafal (memorization), dan peniruan (imitation). Indikator kemampuan berbahasa Inggris yang dicapai warga belajar terdiri dari kemampuan menyimak dalam mengingat, memahami, menmenerapkan, dan menganalisis serta kemampuan berbicara dalam imitatif dan responsif. Dari hasil evaluasi yang diterapkan pengajar melalui test lisan, test tulis, dan test penugasan tindakan untuk mengukur daya ingat warga belajar saat sebelum dan sesudah menerapkan Audio Lingual Method. Warga belajar memiliki peningkatan daya ingat setelah dilatih pengajar secara berulang-ulang dengan media rekaman suara pada materi ‘I don’t have’ dan materi ‘about yourself’ bisa dilihat dari hasil evaluasi tulisan dan juga penugasan video.
