Abstract
This research examines how international media frame the coverage of the tragic collision between a commercial airliner and a Black Hawk H-60 military helicopter in Washington D.C., with a specific focus on CNN and BBC as the objects of analysis. The central issue of this research lies in how the two media outlets construct crisis events with differing ideologies involving civil and military institutions. The objective of the study is to analyze how CNN and BBC construct reality in their coverage of the air crash through the lens of Robert N. Entman's framing theory and Berger and Luckmann’s theory of social construction. This research employs a qualitative approach under a constructivist paradigm, using Entman’s framing analysis method. The findings show that BBC emphasizes systemic procedural failures and coordination issues between civil and military authorities, while CNN frames the tragedy through the lens of national security and its impact on public trust in state institutions. Both media exhibit framing practices that reflect news values such as conflict, impact, and responsibility, and reveal that the construction of reality in the news is not neutral but aligned with the structural interests and institutional agendas of each outlet.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana framing media internasional dalam memberitakan tragedi tabrakan antara pesawat penumpang dan helikopter militer Black Hawk H-60 di Washington D.C., dengan fokus pada CNN dan BBC sebagai objek analisis. Masalah dalam penelitian ini terletak pada bagaimana kedua media membingkai peristiwa krisis dengan ideologi yang berbeda yang melibatkan institusi sipil dan militer. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisis bagaimana CNN dan BBC mengonstruksi realitas dalam pemberitaan tragedi kecelakaan udara melalui teori framing dari Robert N. Entman dan teori konstruksi sosial oleh Berger dan Luckmann. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan paradigma konstruktivis dan metode analisis framing Robert N. Entman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa BBC lebih menekankan kelemahan koordinasi dan prosedur sistemik antara otoritas sipil dan militer, sedangkan CNN membingkai tragedi ini melalui lensa keamanan nasional dan dampaknya terhadap kepercayaan publik terhadap institusi negara. Kedua media menampilkan framing yang mencerminkan nilai berita seperti konflik, dampak dan tanggung jawab, serta memperlihatkan konstruksi realitas yang tidak netral, melainkan berorientasi pada kepentingan struktural dan agenda institusional masing-masing media. | ||||||
