Abstract
Waste management has become a major challenge in many environments, including public facilities, due to limitations in manpower, time, and monitoring systems. Without efficient monitoring, waste can accumulate easily, posing environmental pollution and health risks. To address this issue, this study designed a trash bin monitoring system based on the Internet of Things (IoT), capable of automatically detecting the volume, weight, and methane gas levels of waste. The system was built using an ESP32 microcontroller connected to an ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04), a load cell, and an MQ-2 gas sensor. Data from the three sensors is periodically sent to Firebase and displayed through a web interface. The method used in this study was experimental, involving the testing of a prototype system on a trash bin with limited capacity. Based on system testing, the ultrasonic sensor showed an average error of 1.35% on flat surfaces and 1.04% on uneven surfaces for Trash Bin 1, and 0.00% and 3.70% for Trash Bin 2. The load cell recorded an error rate of 0.52% for Trash Bin 1 and 0.40% for Trash Bin 2. The MQ-2 sensor detected methane gas with the highest values of 216.8 ppm from 3-day-old waste and 32.0 ppm from 3-week-old waste in Trash Bin 1, as well as 302.7 ppm and 16.1 ppm in Trash Bin 2. All sensor data was successfully transmitted to the web monitoring interface in real-time, as long as an internet connection was available. These results indicate that the system is capable of providing real-time information on trash bin conditions.
