Abstract

This research aims to determine the audience's interpretation of fatherhood in parenting content on the TikTok account @babeheji using Stuart Hall's Encoding-Decoding Theory elaborated with Koerner and Fitzpatrick's Family Communication Patterns Theory. This research uses a qualitative approach with a reception analysis method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with 6 young adult informants and documentation. The results show diverse audience interpretations according to dominant, negotiating, and oppositional decoding positions. The majority of the audience is in the dominant position, interpreting fatherhood in parenting as a role model and an important center of care, with emotional presence, active involvement, and a role in instilling moral, equality, and social values as ideal and natural. In the negotiating position, the audience acknowledges the positive message of fatherhood in parenting, but considers the representation of the ideal father difficult to implement due to time constraints, social conditions, and the diverse realities of parenting in each family. Meanwhile, one informant occupies an oppositional position, rejecting fatherhood in parenting on content because it is considered to create social pressure and unrealistic expectations of father figures. Audience interpretation is influenced by the dynamics of family communication, where high levels of conversation encourage dominant interpretations, while low levels of conversation and value incongruence encourage negotiation, and low levels of compliance allow for freer interpretations. Furthermore, audience openness and understanding of fatherhood and parenting issues, personal experiences, and cultural values within the family also shape the audience's interpretation process.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pemaknaan khalayak terhadap fatherhood dalam parenting pada konten di Akun TikTok @babeheji dengan menggunakan Teori Encoding-Decoding Stuart Hall yang dielaborasi dengan Family Communication Patterns Theory Koerner dan Fitzpatrick. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis resepsi. Data diperoleh melalui hasil wawancara mendalam terhadap 6 informan dewasa muda dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pemaknaan khalayak yang beragam sesuai dengan posisi decoding dominan, negosiasi, dan oposisi. Mayoritas khalayak berada pada posisi dominan yang memaknai fatherhood dalam parenting sebagai figur teladan dan pusat pengasuhan yang penting, dengan kehadiran emosional, keterlibatan aktif, serta peran dalam menanamkan nilai moral, kesetaraan, dan sosial sebagai hal ideal dan wajar. Pada posisi negosiasi, khalayak mengakui pesan positif fatherhood dalam parenting, namun menilai representasi ayah ideal sulit diterapkan karena keterbatasan waktu, kondisi sosial, serta realitas pengasuhan yang beragam di tiap keluarga. Sementara itu, satu informan menempati posisi oposisi, menolak fatherhood dalam parenting pada konten karena dinilai membentuk tekanan sosial dan ekspektasi figur ayah yang tidak realistis. Pemaknaan khalayak dilatarbelakangi oleh dinamika komunikasi keluarga, di mana tingkat percakapan tinggi mendorong pemaknaan dominan, sementara percakapan rendah dan ketidakselarasan nilai mendorong negosiasi, serta kepatuhan rendah memungkinkan pemaknaan lebih bebas. Selain itu, keterbukaan dan pemahaman khalayak terhadap isu fatherhood dan parenting, pengalaman pribadi, serta nilai-nilai budaya dalam keluarga turut membentuk proses pemaknaan khalayak.
