Abstract

This study discusses the deconstruction of the identity of “Beggar Village” through the social, economic, and political transformations that occur. This study uses the phenomenological method and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory with différance and trace indicators. The results of this study indicate that the change in the identity of Kampung Paling, previously known as “Kampung Pengemis”, is not permanent. Through the concept of différance, the meaning of residents' identities continues to move and change along with experiences and changes that occur, such as involvement in social activities, the growth of convection businesses, and participation in government programs. Their identities can no longer be confined to one old meaning, because new meanings always emerge from social situations. Meanwhile, the trace concept shows that the new identity formed by residents still carries traces of the old identity. This study shows that the residents of the village can no longer be seen or labeled as a "beggar village" like in the past. That identity was never really fixed, and is now slowly changing along with the social, economic, and political life they live.
