Abstract

This study aims to develop a Digital Storytelling (DST)-based instructional media grounded in local Banten folktales as an alternative pedagogical strategy to enhance speaking skills and foster joyful learning in English language instruction at modern Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Lebak Regency. The research is motivated by the observed low speaking proficiency among students, limited utilization of digital learning media, and the lack of integration of local cultural wisdom into foreign language education. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes five phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The resulting product, Digitell Banten Web, is an interactive platform featuring three Banten local stories—Saija Adinda, The Origin of Kapal Bosok, and Nyi Mas Gamparan. Data collection involved observation, interviews, questionaries, expert validation, as well as pre-test and post-test assessments to measure improvements in speaking ability. Findings indicate that the developed media achieved a very high level of validity based on expert evaluations (90.1%). Both limited and broader trials demonstrated significant improvements in students' speaking skills, with N-gain scores of 87.93% and 85.14%, respectively. Beyond cognitive gains, the media contributed to the creation of an engaging, participatory, and collaborative learning environment. The study concludes that DST based on local folktales is an effective, contextual, and culturally relevant instructional strategy, aligned with the characteristics of pesantren students and the demands of 21st-century learning. The implications are substantial for enhancing English instruction in modern Islamic boarding schools, particularly in promoting digital literacy, embedding local cultural values, and establishing a communicative and transformative learning model.

Produk yang dikembangkan adalah Digitell Banten Web, media interaktif yang memuat tiga narasi cerita lokal rakyat Banten—Saija Adinda, Asal Usul Kapal Bosok, dan Nyi Mas Gamparan. Instrumen penelitian meliputi observasi, wawancara, kuesioner, validasi ahli, serta pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur peningkatan kemampuan berbicara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media yang dikembangkan memiliki tingkat kelayakan sangat tinggi berdasarkan validasi ahli (90,1%). Uji coba terbatas dan luas menunjukkan efektivitas media dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara santri secara signifikan, dengan nilai N-gain masing-masing sebesar 87,93% dan 85,14%. Selain peningkatan kognitif, media ini juga berkontribusi terhadap terciptanya suasana belajar yang menyenangkan, partisipatif, dan kolaboratif. Simpulan dari penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa DST berbasis cerita lokal merupakan strategi yang efektif, kontekstual, dan relevan dengan karakteristik santri serta kebutuhan kurikulum abad ke-21. Implikasi penelitian ini sangat signifikan bagi pengembangan media pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di pesantren modern, terutama dalam membangun literasi digital, mengintegrasikan nilai-nilai budaya lokal, serta menciptakan model pembelajaran yang komunikatif dan transformatif.
