Abstract

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays an important role in a country's economic growth, particularly in fostering development, creating jobs, and facilitating technology transfer. In the context of globalization, Indonesia and South Korea are trying to attract more FDI to strengthen their economies. However, the factors affecting FDI in the two countries may differ due to differences in economic and policy conditions. This study aims to analyze the effect of GDP per capita, inflation, exchange rates, exports, and imports on FDI in Indonesia and South Korea during the period 1984-2023. The method used is Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) to estimate the dynamic relationship between variables in the short and long term. The results showed that in the short term, in Indonesia, GDP Per Capita and Imports have a positive effect on FDI, while Inflation, Exchange Rates, and Exports have a negative effect. Meanwhile, in South Korea, Inflation and Imports have a positive effect, and GDP Per Capita, Exchange Rates, and Exports have a negative effect on FDI. In the long run, there are no significant variables that affect FDI in Indonesia, while in South Korea, Exchange Rates and Exports have a negative effect, and Imports have a positive effect on FDI. These findings indicate the difference in economic dynamics between the two countries in attracting FDI, thus requiring different policy approaches to increase foreign investment.
