Abstract
This study analyzes the representation of Black women’s struggles in the film Hidden Figures using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory, particularly the second trichotomy (icon, index, symbol) to examine the relationship between signs and their objects. The film portrays the experience of gender and racial discrimination faced by three main characters Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson within NASA’s work environment in the 1960s. This research adopts a constructivist paradigm with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data collection techniques include film observation and visual documentation, while the data analysis technique applies sign classification to identify the representation of signs, objects, and interpretants in selected scenes. The results show that the signs depicted in the film represent a discriminatory social system toward Black women, including limited access to positions, workspaces, and education. The interpretation of these signs reveals that the struggles shown are not merely personal but acts of resistance against structural inequality.
