Abstract

Background: Obesity is an increasing global health problem, including in Indonesia, with a prevalence of 21.8% according to Riskesdas. The imbalance between energy intake and expenditure is the main cause of accumulation of body fat stored in adipose tissue. Obesity is known to increase the risk of various non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and cancer. Apart from dietary factors and physical activity, sleep quality also plays a role in regulating metabolism and body composition. Research at Udayana University revealed that students with poor sleep quality have a higher risk of increasing body fat percentage. Therefore, it is important to explore the relationship between sleep quality and body composition in an effort to maintain the health of students during the educational process. Methods : This study used an analytic observational design through a cross-sectional approach. Questionnaire links were distributed to students of the Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University Medical Study Program through Google Form and body fat percentage measurements using Bioimpedance Analysis. Stratified random sampling was chosen as the sample technique in this study with a total sample of 108 people. Results: Poor sleep quality amounted to 60 people (55.6%) which was also the highest level of sleep quality experienced by students in the study. In addition, high body fat percentage in the study was found to be 96 people (88.9%). There was no relationship between gender, age, class, duration of physical activity, frequency of meals, and consumption of caffeinated beverages. Students with poor sleep quality had a risk of 4.38 times higher body fat percentage compared to students who had good sleep quality. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between sleep quality and body fat percentage (p value 0.024) (>0.05) and CI (1.11-17.23).
