Anggita Karunia. NIM. 6662210048. The Influence of News Exposure on High Unemployment Rates on Students’ Perceptions in Choosing Non-Linear Careers Outside Their Academic Majors. Supervisor: Dr. Idi Dimyati, M.I.Kom. Communication Studies Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. 2025. The high unemployment rate in Indonesia, particularly among university graduates, is a recurring issue frequently highlighted by mass media, especially online media. News coverage of this phenomenon has the potential to influence students' perceptions regarding career prospects related to their field of study. This study aims to examine the effect of news exposure high unemployment rates on students' perceptions in choosing non-linear careers—career paths that do not align with their academic major. This research adopts a quantitative approach using a survey method and applies Cultivation Theory. The sampling technique used in this study, quota sampling, where the number of respondents is proportionally determined based on faculty background. The sample consists of 100 active students from the 2021 cohort of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University (Untirta). The result show an R Square value of 0.273, indicating that news exposure (X) influences career perception (Y) by 27.3%, while the remaining 72.7% is affected by other factors. Then from the results of the t-test, a value of t_hitung (6.071) > t_tabel(1.984), meaning that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This indicates that news exposure about the high unemployment rate significantly affects students' perceptions in choosing non-linear careers outside their academic field. Keywords: Non-linear Career, Online Media, Unemployment, Perception, News Exposure
