Abstract
This study aims to analyze the reality of differentiated instruction and character development of elementary school students as portrayed in the novel Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. A descriptive qualitative approach was used, with data analysis techniques based on the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The primary data source was the novel Totto-chan, while secondary data were obtained from relevant literature on differentiated learning and character education. The findings reveal that the learning process at Tomoe Gakuen, as depicted in the novel, reflects differentiated instruction encompassing content, process, and product in accordance with Carol Ann Tomlinson’s theory. The school provides learning freedom tailored to students’ interests, learning styles, and readiness levels. Moreover, the character development of the main character is illustrated through the internalization of moral values such as responsibility, independence, empathy, tolerance, and cooperation, in line with Thomas Lickona’s character education theory. The educational practices implemented at Tomoe Gakuen also serve as a source of inspiration for pedagogical innovations that are humanistic and contextual. This research recommends the use of literary works as reflective media in the learning process and highlights the importance of teacher training in implementing differentiated instruction and holistic character education in elementary schools. Pendekatan yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik analisis data model Miles dan Huberman yang meliputi reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Sumber data utama adalah novel Totto-chan, sedangkan data sekunder diperoleh dari literatur yang relevan mengenai pembelajaran berdiferensiasi dan pendidikan karakter. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran di Tomoe Gakuen dalam novel Totto-chan merepresentasikan pembelajaran berdiferensiasi yang mencakup aspek konten, proses, dan produk sesuai teori Carol Ann Tomlinson. Sekolah memberikan kebebasan belajar yang disesuaikan dengan minat, gaya belajar, dan kesiapan peserta didik. Selain itu, pembentukan karakter tokoh utama digambarkan melalui proses internalisasi nilai-nilai moral seperti tanggung jawab, kemandirian, empati, toleransi, dan kerja sama yang sesuai dengan teori pendidikan karakter Thomas Lickona. Pendidikan yang diterapkan di Tomoe Gakuen juga menginspirasi inovasi pedagogik yang humanis dan kontekstual. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan pemanfaatan karya sastra sebagai media reflektif dalam pembelajaran dan pentingnya pelatihan guru dalam menerapkan pembelajaran berdiferensiasi dan pendidikan karakter secara holistik di sekolah dasar. | |||||||||
