Abstract
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the second most common bacterial infection after Acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI), with a higher prevalence in women due to anatomical factors. One of the preventive efforts against UTI is the application of good personal hygiene practices. However, among adolescent girls, such practices are often neglected. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between personal hygiene behavior and UTI symptoms among high school female students in Serang City. A cross-sectional design with cluster sampling technique was employed in two high schools. A total of 110 students participated, with data collected using validated questionnaires on personal hygiene behavior and the “typical” subscale of the Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS). The results found that most students demonstrated good personal hygiene behavior (74,5%), although some students still reported UTI symptoms (23,6%). The Chi-square test indicated a significant association between personal hygiene behavior and UTI symptoms (p<0,01), where students with poor personal hygiene behavior were 12,5 times more likely to experience UTI symptoms compared to those with good hygiene behavior (OR=12,5; 95% CI: 4,4–35). The findings confirm that poor personal hygiene behavior is associated with an increased risk of UTI symptoms.
