Abstract

This research is motivated by the limited availability of mathematics learning media that integrate local cultural contexts familiar to students’ daily lives to support the improvement of their numeracy skills. Therefore, the focus of this study is to examine the feasibility of using an e-module based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) combined with the strategy of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) in enhancing students’ numeracy skills. The purpose of this study is to develop a PBL-CRT-based e-module that is valid, practical, and effective for use in numeracy learning. This study employs a Research and Development (RnD) approach following the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The subjects of the study include subject matter experts, media experts, and education experts for product validation; as well as mathematics teachers and eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Kota Serang for the implementation phase. The instruments used consist of interviews, expert validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, and numeracy ability tests. The results indicate that the developed e-module is valid, with an average overall expert validation score of 85.34%. Its practicality, based on teacher and student responses, achieved an average score of 91.43%. In terms of effectiveness, there was an improvement in students’ numeracy skills with an N-gain score of 0.68 (moderate category), and the t-test results showed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the use of the e-module was significantly more effective than conventional learning in improving students’ numeracy skills. Furthermore, culturally responsive learning was proven not only to support academic achievement but also to foster students’ cultural awareness and critical thinking skills regarding the social contexts around them.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh terbatasnya media pembelajaran matematika yang mengintegrasikan konteks budaya lokal yang dekat dengan kehidupan siswa untuk mendukung peningkatan kemampuan numerasi mereka. Oleh karena itu, fokus penelitian ini adalah mengkaji kelayakan penggunaan e-modul berbasis Problem Based Learning (PBL) yang dipadukan dengan strategi Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) dalam meningkatkan kemampuan numerasi siswa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengembangkan e-modul berbasis PBL-CRT yang valid, praktis, dan efektif digunakan dalam proses pembelajaran numerasi. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian Research and Development (RnD) yang mengacu pada model pengembangan ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, dan Evaluation). Subjek dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari ahli materi, ahli media, dan ahli pendidikan untuk memperoleh validasi produk; serta guru matematika dan siswa kelas VIII semester genap di SMP Negeri 14 Kota Serang sebagai pengguna dalam tahap implementasi. Instrumen yang digunakan meliputi wawancara, lembar validasi ahli, angket respon guru dan siswa, serta tes kemampuan numerasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa e-modul yang dikembangkan dinyatakan valid dengan persentase rata-rata keseluruhan validasi oleh ahli sebesar 85,34%. Kepraktisan e-modul yang diukur melalui respon guru dan siswa memperoleh skor rata-rata sebesar 91,43%. Dari aspek efektivitas, terdapat peningkatan kemampuan numerasi siswa dengan nilai N-gain sebesar 0,68 (kategori sedang), serta hasil uji-t menunjukkan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,000 (p < 0,05), yang berarti penggunaan e-modul secara signifikan lebih efektif dibandingkan dengan pembelajaran konvensional dalam meningkatkan kemampuan numerasi. Selain itu, pembelajaran yang responsif terhadap budaya siswa terbukti tidak hanya mendukung pencapaian akademik, tetapi juga membentuk karakter siswa yang lebih sadar budaya serta memiliki kemampuan berpikir kritis terhadap konteks sosial di sekitarnya.
