Abstract
This research aims to investigate the effect of the Describing Picture Illustration Strategy on the speaking ability of seventh-grade students at SMPN 1 Ciruas. Speaking is one of the essential language skills that facilitates communication and expression of ideas. However, many students face challenges in speaking English due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes. This quasi-experimental study involved two classes: an experimental group that received treatment using the Describing Picture Strategy and a control group that followed conventional instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were used to measure students’ speaking performance in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group, whose post-test average score increased from 82.50 to 86.83, compared to a slight increase in the control group from 83.50 to 83.83. Statistical analyses including the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Paired Sample T-Test confirmed that the strategy had a statistically significant impact on students’ speaking ability (p < 0.05). The use of picture illustrations helped students visualize and describe ideas more effectively, reducing speaking anxiety and enhancing fluency. This study suggests that integrating visual media into speaking instruction can foster better engagement and learning outcomes.

Berbicara adalah salah satu keterampilan bahasa penting yang memfasilitasi komunikasi dan ekspresi ide. Namun, banyak siswa menghadapi tantangan dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris karena keterbatasan kosakata, kurang percaya diri, dan takut membuat kesalahan. Studi kuasi-eksperimental ini melibatkan dua kelas: kelompok eksperimen yang menerima perlakuan menggunakan Strategi Gambar Mendeskripsikan dan kelompok kontrol yang mengikuti instruksi konvensional. Penilaian pra-tes dan pasca-tes digunakan untuk mengukur kinerja berbicara siswa dalam hal pengucapan, kosakata, dan kelancaran. Temuan tersebut mengungkapkan peningkatan yang signifikan pada kelompok eksperimen, yang skor rata-rata pasca-tesnya meningkat dari 82,50 menjadi 86,83, dibandingkan dengan sedikit peningkatan pada kelompok kontrol dari 83,50 menjadi 83,83. Analisis statistik termasuk Uji Wilcoxon Signed-Rank dan Uji-T Sampel Berpasangan mengonfirmasi bahwa strategi tersebut memiliki dampak yang signifikan secara statistik terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa (p < 0,05).
