Abstract

This study aims to compare the diversity and abundance of soil arthropods in cayenne pepper plants (Capsicum frutescens L.) with different systems mulch and no mulch in Kadubeureum Village, Serang Regency. The research was carried out using a survey method with the installation of pitfall traps on cayenne pepper fields using a plastic mulch planting system and without mulching. Identification of soil arthropods was carried out down to the genus level, and diversity and dominance analyses were calculated using the Shannon-Wiener and Simpson indices. The results of the study showed that the planting system without mulching had a higher index of soil arthropod diversity and evenness compared to the planting system with plastic mulch. The composition and structure of soil arthropod communities are also more diverse on land without mulch, with the discovery of more genera of predatory and detritivores. These findings indicate that the use of plastic mulch can reduce the diversity of soil arthropods, potentially disrupting the ecosystem balance and decomposition process in the cayenne pepper agroecosystem. Therefore, the selection of an environmentally friendly planting system needs to be considered to maintain the sustainability of production and soil health.
