Abstract

This study aims to explain what are the difficulties and causes of mathematics learning difficulties of junior high school students in understanding the concept of whole numbers based on gender. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative research using data collection techniques, namely description tests and interviews. The research subjects studied were students of class VII A SMPN 18 Serang City who represented high, medium, and low categories of mathematical concept understanding ability. The results showed that the concept understanding ability of high category students consisted of 5 female students, having difficulty in learning concepts and applying principles. While the medium group students consisted of 17 female students, 9 male students and low group students consisted of 9 male students, having difficulty in learning concepts, applying principles, and solving verbal problems. The causes of mathematics learning difficulties experienced by high and medium group female students are lack of accuracy in using formulas and solving steps, and in story problems regarding addition and subtraction operations students are still mistaken, confused about changing story problems to the form of a number line. In addition, they did not write the known and asked questions in the problem. Meanwhile, the causes of difficulties experienced by male students in the medium and low groups are not writing known and asked questions in the problem, not understanding integer material so they do not understand the command sentence.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan apa saja kesulitan dan penyebab kesulitan belajar matematika siswa SMP dalam memahami konsep bilangan bulat berdasarkan gender. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu tes uraian dan wawancara. Subjek penelitian yang diteliti adalah siswa kelas VII A SMPN 18 Kota Serang yang mewakilkan kategori tinggi, sedang, dan rendah kemampuan pemahaman konsep matematika. Hasil penelitian diperoleh bahwa kemampuan pemahaman konsep siswa kategori tinggi terdiri atas 5 siswa perempuan, mengalami kesulitan dalam mempelajari konsep dan menerapkan prinsip. Sedangkan siswa kelompok sedang terdiri atas 17 siswa perempuan, 9 siswa laki-laki dan siswa kelompok rendah terdiri atas 9 siswa laki-laki, mengalami kesulitan dalam mempelajari konsep, menerapkan prinsip, dan menyelesaikan masalah verbal. Penyebab kesulitan belajar matematika yang dialami siswa perempuan kelompok tinggi dan sedang yaitu kurang tepat dalam menggunakan rumus dan langkah penyelesaian, serta dalam soal cerita mengenai operasi hitung penjumlahan dan pengurangan siswa masih keliru, bingung mengubah soal cerita ke bentuk garis bilangan. Selain itu, tidak menuliskan diketahui dan ditanya pada soal. Sedangkan, penyebab kesulitan yang dialami siswa laki-laki kelompok sedang dan rendah yaitu tidak menuliskan diketahui dan ditanyakan pada soal, belum paham materi bilangan bulat sehingga tidak paham kalimat perintah pada soal bilangan bulat, kurang tepat dalam menggunakan rumus dan langkah penyelesaian, dalam operasi hitung perkalian dan pembagian siswa masih keliru.
