Abstract
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach in improving mathematical communication and problem- solving skills, as well as to examine the effect of students' initial mathematical abilities on the learning outcomes at the senior high school level. This research uses a quantitative approach with a 2 x 2 factorial experimental design. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 72 XII grade science students from SMA Negeri 2 Krakatau Steel Cilegon. 36 students in the experimental class and 36 in the control class. Based on the pretest results, 12 students with high initial abilities and 12 students with low initial abilities were selected from each class. Thus, the final sample analyzed consisted of 48 students. The instrument used in this study was an essay test, and the data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). The results show that the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach is more effective than the Scientific approach in improving students’ mathematical communication and problem-solving skills, regardless of their initial mathematical ability levels, as indicated by a significance value (p < 0.05).

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) dalam meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi dan pemecahan masalah matematis, serta mengkaji pengaruh kemampuan awal matematis terhadap hasil pembelajaran tersebut pada siswa SMA. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen desain faktorial 2 x 2. Sampel dalam penelitian ini dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling, yaitu 72 siswa SMA Negeri 2 Krakatau Steel Cilegon kelas XII IPA, 36 siswa untuk kelas eksperimen dan 36 siswa untuk kelas kontrol. Berdasarkan hasil pretest, dipilih 12 siswa berkemampuan awal tinggi dan 12 siswa berkemampuan awal rendah dari tiap kelas. Dengan demikian, jumlah sampel akhir yang dianalisis sebanyak 48 siswa. SMA Negeri 2 Krakatau Steel Cilegon kelas XII IPA. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah tes uraian (essay test) dengan teknik analisis data menggunakan anova (Analysis of Variance) dua jalur. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) lebih efektif daripada pendekatan Saintifik dalam meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi dan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa, tanpa memandang tinggi atau rendahnya kemampuan awal matematis siswa dengan nilai signifikansi (p < 0,05). | |||||||||
