Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the Engineering Design Process (EDP) on students' scientific literacy concerning the concept of environmental pollution. The research employs a quantitative approach using a quasi experimental method with a pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design. The population of the study consisted of all 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 7 Kota Serang, with the sample comprising two classes: a control class and an experimental class. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling. Data were collected through both test and non-test instruments. Data analysis was conducted using an independent samples t-test with the assistance of SPSS 25.0 software. The hypothesis testing results showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, indicating a significant effect of EDP on students' scientific literacy. The average scientific literacy score in the experimental class increased from 18.98 in the pretest to 89.64 in the posttest. The highest-scoring aspect of scientific literacy was the context aspect, with an average of 95.59. All stages of the EDP—define, learn, plan, try, test, and decide—contributed to improving students' scientific literacy. Each stage encouraged students to identify problems, understand scientific concepts, design solutions, try and test ideas, and make data-based decisions.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh Engineering Design Process (EDP) terhadap literasi sains siswa pada konsep pencemaran lingkungan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode quasi eksperimen dan desain pretest-posttest with non-equivalent control group. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas X SMA Negeri 7 Kota Serang, dengan sampel terdiri dari dua kelas, yaitu kelas kontrol dan kelas eksperimen. Sampel diambil menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui tes dan non-tes. Analisis data menggunakan uji independent sample t-test dengan bantuan program SPSS 25.0. Hasil uji hipotesis menunjukkan nilai Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar 0,000, yang berarti terdapat pengaruh signifikan EDP terhadap literasi sains siswa. Skor rata-rata literasi sains siswa di kelas eksperimen meningkat dari 18,98 pada pretest menjadi 89,64 pada posttest. Aspek literasi sains yang memperoleh nilai tertinggi adalah aspek konteks dengan rata-rata sebesar 95,59. Seluruh tahapan EDP, yaitu define, learn, plan, try, test, dan decide, memberikan kontribusi terhadap peningkatan literasi sains siswa. Tahapan EDP mendorong siswa untuk mengidentifikasi masalah, memahami konsep-konsep ilmiah, merancang solusi, mencoba dan menguji ide, serta membuat keputusan berbasis data.
