Abstract
Water hyacinth, yellow velvetleaf, and water clover are common aquatic weeds typically found in freshwater ecosystems. These plants contain natural pigments that show promising potential as eco-friendly dyes for batik ecoprint applications. Ecoprint is a fabric dyeing technique where plant materials are placed directly onto the fabric, allowing their natural pigments to transfer without producing harmful environmental pollutants. This study aimed to assess the suitability of water hyacinth, genjer (yellow velvetleaf), and water clover as natural dye sources by evaluating the resulting color intensity, color fastness, and user preferences through hedonic testing. A quantitative experimental approach was used, employing a one factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments—each corresponding to one type of leaf—and three replications per treatment. The findings revealed that the ecoprints produced distinct patterns in shades of misty moss (#A9AB7C), moss green (#99A359), and moss green (#939E5B), with moderate to deep color saturation. Color fastness tests showed excellent (5) to good (4–5) resistance to dry rubbing; good (4–5) resistance to wet rubbing; good (4–5) durability against acidic and alkaline sweat; excellent to good resistance to detergent exposure; and excellent (5), good (4), to fair (3) resistance under daylight exposure. The hedonic test results indicated that the ecoprint samples were positively received, with respondents expressing preferences ranging from “liked” to “highly liked.”.
