Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of student errors in solving problems related to algebraic material using Newman’s Error Analysis and to identify appropriate scaffolding strategies to support students in addressing these problems. The research design employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects of the study are eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 19 Kota Tangerang, selected based on the criteria that they have participated in algebra learning, taken a written test on algebra, and exhibited a variety of errors in the test. A constant comparative method was used to explain each type of error based on Newman’s indicators through interviews with two subjects representing each type of error. The instruments used included algebra problem-solving test questions and semi-structured interviews. The results of the study indicate that the most common types of errors made by students are: 1) Process Skills, 2) Transformation, 3) Comprehension, 4) Writing the Final Answer, and 5) Reading. The scaffolding strategies provided during the interviews—namely reviewing, explaining, and restructuring—proved effective in reducing student errors.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis kesalahan siswa dalam menyelesaikan masalah pada materi aljabar menggunakan Newman Error Analysis dan mengetahui strategi scaffolding yang sesuai untuk diberikan dalam menyelesaikan masalah tersebut. Desain penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian studi kasus. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 19 Kota Tangerang yang dipilih dengan kriteria bahwa siswa telah mengikuti pembelajaran materi aljabar, mengikuti tes tertulis materi aljabar, dan menunjukkan variasi kesalahan dalam tes tertulis aljabar. Metode perbandingan tetap digunakan untuk menjelaskan setiap jenis kesalahan berdasarkan indikator Newman dengan wawancara dua subjek pada setiap jenis kesalahan. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa soal tes pemecahan masalah materi aljabar dan wawancara semi terstruktur. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenis kesalahan yang paling banyak dilakukan siswa: 1) Keterampilan Proses 2) Transformasi 3) Pemahaman 4) Penulisan Jawaban Akhir 5) Membaca. Strategi scaffolding yang diberikan ketika wawancara berupa reviewing, explaining, dan restructuring memberikan peningkatan untuk mengurangi kesalahan siswa.
