Abstract

This study aims to synthesize carbon dots (C-dots) from papaya peel waste using microwave irradiation method and assess their potential as Fe³⁺ metal ion sensor. The synthesis was carried out by smoothing papaya skin and heating it using microwave, then characterization was carried out using UV-Vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL). The results showed that the Cdots produced had a cyan-colored luminescence when illuminated by UV light, with emission peaks in the range of 420-490 nm. UV-Vis analysis showed a change in absorbance spectrum after the addition of Fe³⁺, while PL analysis showed a change in emission intensity indicating a specific interaction between Cdots and Fe³⁺ ions. Based on these results, C-dots from papaya skin have the potential as a sensitive and environmentally friendly optical sensor material to detect Fe³⁺ heavy metal.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mensintesis carbon dots (C-dots) dari limbah kulit pepaya menggunakan metode iradiasi gelombang mikro (microwave) dan mengkaji potensinya sebagai sensor ion logam Fe³⁺. Sintesis dilakukan dengan cara menghaluskan kulit pepaya dan memanaskannya menggunakan microwave, kemudian dilakukan karakterisasi menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-Vis dan photoluminescence (PL). Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa C-dots yang dihasilkan memiliki pendaran cahaya berwarna cyan saat disinari sinar UV, dengan puncak emisi pada rentang 420–490 nm. Analisis UV-Vis menunjukkan adanya perubahan spektrum absorbansi setelah penambahan Fe³⁺, sedangkan analisis PL menunjukkan perubahan intensitas emisi yang menandakan interaksi spesifik antara C-dots dan ion Fe³⁺. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, C-dots dari kulit pepaya memiliki potensi sebagai material sensor optik yang sensitif dan ramah lingkungan untuk mendeteksi logam berat Fe³⁺.
