Abstract

This study aims to examine the communication competence of the Public Relations (PR) division of Bank Indonesia Banten Province in managing the GenBI Banten community as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. The main focus is on how PR’s communication competence contributes to building relationships, engaging in interactions, and maintaining close ties with community members. Referring to the Communication Competence theory proposed by Littlejohn and Foss (2009), the study explores five key aspects: fundamental, social, linguistic, interpersonal, and relational competence. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, relying on primary data collected through interviews with key informants from the PR team at Bank Indonesia Banten. The background of this study stems from the lack of interaction and presence of PR managers in community activities, which has led some members to feel neglected and distant from PR representatives. However, the findings also reveal several efforts by the PR division to apply communication competencies in building effective communication, interaction, and relationships with the GenBI Banten community. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the importance of communication competence for public relations practitioners in fostering community relations, and serves as a strategic evaluation for improving community management in the future.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji kompetensi Humas Bank Indonesia Provinsi Banten dalam mengelola komunitas GenBI Banten sebagai bagian dari program tanggung jawab sosial perusahaan (CSR). Fokus utama penelitian adalah bagaimana kompetensi komunikasi Humas dalam menjalin hubungan, berinteraksi, serta menjaga kedekatan dengan anggota komunitas. Berdasarkan teori Kompetensi Komunikasi yang dikemukakan oleh Littlejohn dan Foss (2009), terdapat lima aspek yang ditinjau: kompetensi fundamental, sosial, linguistik, interpersonal, dan relasional. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode deskriptif, serta mengandalkan data primer dari wawancara dengan beberapa narasumber kunci dari pihak Humas BI Provinsi Banten. Latar belakang penelitian ini disebabkan karena kurangnya intensitas interaksi dan kehadiran pengelola dalam kegiatan komunitas. Hal ini menyebabkan sebagian anggota merasa kurang mendapatkan perhatian dan kedekatan dari pihak Humas. Meski demikian, berdasarkan hasil penelitian terdapat pula upaya-upaya penerapan kompetensi komunikasi yang dilakukan oleh Humas untuk membangun komunikasi, menjalin interaksi dan hubungan dengan komunitas GenBI Provinsi Banten. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi dalam pemahaman pentingnya kompetensi komunikasi bagi praktisi humas dalam membina hubungan dengan komunitas, serta menjadi bahan evaluasi strategis untuk perbaikan pengelolaan komunitas di masa depan.
