Abstract
This study aims to analyze the relationship between conceptual understanding and students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the context of problem-based learning. The background of this study is based on the low ability of students to understand mathematical concepts and solve mathematical problems independently, as reflected in the results of national assessments and observations in class VII MTs MII Cidangiang. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The subjects of the study were students of class VII B MTs MII Cidangiang Pandeglang in the 2024/2025 academic year who were selected through purposive sampling techniques. The instruments used included conceptual understanding tests, mathematical problem-solving tests, in-depth interviews, and participatory observations. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's analysis techniques, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that most students were in the moderate category in terms of conceptual understanding and mathematical problem-solving abilities. Students with high conceptual understanding tend to have high mathematical problem-solving abilities as well, which indicates a close relationship between the two abilities. Problem-based learning has been proven to provide space for students to construct understanding independently and improve critical thinking skills. This study recommends that teachers consistently apply contextual and student-centered learning approaches, such as problem-based learning, to improve the quality of mathematics learning.

Additional Information: | Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis hubungan antara pemahaman konseptual dengan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa dalam konteks pembelajaran berbasis masalah (Problem Based Learning). Latar belakang penelitian ini didasarkan pada rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam memahami konsep matematika serta menyelesaikan permasalahan matematis secara mandiri, sebagaimana tercermin dalam hasil asesmen nasional dan observasi di kelas VII MTs MII Cidangiang. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain fenomenologis. Subyek penelitian adalah siswa kelas VII B MTs MII Cidangiang Pandeglang tahun ajaran 2024/2025 yang dipilih melalui teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan meliputi tes pemahaman konseptual, tes pemecahan masalah matematis, wawancara mendalam, dan observasi partisipatif. Data dianalisis menggunakan teknik analisis Miles dan Huberman, yaitu reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa berada pada kategori sedang dalam hal pemahaman konseptual dan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis. Siswa dengan pemahaman konseptual yang tinggi cenderung memiliki kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis yang tinggi pula, yang mengindikasikan adanya hubungan yang erat antara kedua kemampuan tersebut. Pembelajaran berbasis masalah terbukti memberikan ruang bagi siswa untuk mengonstruksi pemahaman secara mandiri dan meningkatkan keterampilan berpikir kritis. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan agar guru secara konsisten menerapkan pendekatan pembelajaran yang kontekstual dan berpusat pada siswa, seperti pembelajaran berbasis masalah, guna meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran matematika. | |||||||||
