Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the problem-based learning model with the STEAM approach on students' mathematical critical thinking ability and students' response to mathematics learning by using the problem-based learning model with the STEAM approach. This research uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design of the nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group type. The population of this study was all ninth-grade students in SMPN 10 in Serang City, while the samples used were two classes totaling 72 students: class IX E as an experimental class that applied the problem-based learning model with a STEAM approach and class IX A as a control class that applied a collaborative learning model. The data collection techniques used in this study were a critical thinking skills test and a student response questionnaire. The results showed that: 1) The critical thinking skills of students who apply the problem-based learning model with the STEAM approach are better than students who apply the collaborative learning model seen from the posttest results of the experimental class, which achieved an average score of 83.33, superior to the control class, which was only 78.19. 2) The results of the analysis of student response questionnaires show that the application of the problem-based learning model with the STEAM approach gets a positive response and can increase student knowledge of the material taught, activeness, interest, and student learning motivation. 3) The PBL-STEAM model is effective in improving students' critical thinking skills so that it becomes an alternative learning model that can be implemented by teachers in learning mathematics.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model pembelajaran problem-based learning dengan pendekatan STEAM terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis matematis siswa dan respon siswa terhadap pembelajaran matematika dengan menggunakan model problem-based learning dengan pendekatan STEAM. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain Quasi Experimental jenis Nonequivalent Pretest-Posttest Control Group. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas IX di SMPN 10 Kota Serang, sedangkan sampel yang digunakan sebanyak dua kelas yang berjumlah 72 siswa, kelas IX E sebagai kelas eksperimen yang menerapkan model pembelajaran problem-based learning dengan pendekatan STEAM dan kelas IX A sebagai kelas kontrol yang menerapkan model pembelajaran kolaboratif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah tes kemampuan berpikir kritis dan angket respon siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: 1) kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa yang menerapkan model pembelajaran problem-based learning dengan pendekatan STEAM lebih baik dibandingkan dengan siswa yang menerapkan model pembelajaran kolaboratif dilihat dari hasil posttest kelas eksperimen yang meraih rata-rata skor 83,33, lebih unggul dibanding kelas kontrol yang hanya 78,19, 2) hasil analisis angket respon siswa menunjukkan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran problem-based learning dengan pendekatan STEAM mendapatkan respon yang positif serta mampu meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa terhadap materi yang diajarkan, keaktifan, minat, dan motivasi belajar siswa, 3) model PBL-STEAM efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa sehingga menjadi alternatif model pembelajaran yang dapat diimplementasikan oleh guru dalam pembelajaran matematika.
