Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the drill teaching method in enhancing reading skills among elementary school students, with a specific focus on SDN Tembulun 2 in Cilegon City, Banten Province. The background of this research stems from the significant percentage of early-grade students who still struggle with reading fluency, recognition of letters, and comprehension. These difficulties are often caused by phonological limitations, inadequate literacy exposure at home, and the use of conventional teaching methods that are not tailored to individual learning needs. Using a qualitative research design and a case study approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory classroom observations, and document analysis. The results demonstrate that the systematic implementation of drill teaching characterized by structured repetition and targeted reading exercises significantly improves students’ letter recognition, phonemic awareness, reading speed, and comprehension abilities. The method also increases student motivation and self-confidence in reading, especially when supported by engaging instructional materials and consistent feedback. Moreover, the success of this approach is reinforced by the active involvement of teachers and collaboration with parents in monitoring and supporting reading development at home. The study concludes that drill teaching is a highly practical and adaptable method for improving foundational literacy skills, particularly in contexts where students have limited access to educational resources. The findings offer valuable insights for educators, school administrators, and policymakers in designing effective reading instruction for early elementary education.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji efektivitas metode pembelajaran berbasis drill teaching dalam meningkatkan keterampilan membaca pada peserta didik sekolah dasar, dengan fokus khusus pada SDN Tembulun 2 di Kota Cilegon, Provinsi Banten. Latar belakang penelitian ini didasari oleh tingginya persentase peserta didik kelas awal yang masih mengalami kesulitan dalam kelancaran membaca, pengenalan huruf, dan pemahaman bacaan. Kesulitan ini umumnya disebabkan oleh keterbatasan fonologis, kurangnya paparan literasi di rumah, serta penggunaan metode pembelajaran konvensional yang belum disesuaikan dengan kebutuhan belajar individu. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipatif di kelas, dan analisis dokumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan metode drill teaching secara sistematis dengan pengulangan terstruktur dan latihan membaca yang ditargetkan secara signifikan meningkatkan kemampuan pengenalan huruf, kesadaran fonemik, kecepatan membaca, dan pemahaman peserta didik. Metode ini juga meningkatkan motivasi dan kepercayaan diri peserta didik dalam membaca, terutama jika didukung oleh media pembelajaran yang menarik dan umpan balik yang konsisten. Selain itu, keberhasilan pendekatan ini diperkuat oleh keterlibatan aktif guru dan kerja sama dengan orang tua dalam memantau serta mendukung perkembangan membaca di rumah. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa drill teaching merupakan metode yang praktis dan adaptif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan literasi dasar, khususnya di konteks pendidikan yang memiliki keterbatasan sumber daya. Temuan ini memberikan wawasan penting bagi pendidik, kepala sekolah, dan pembuat kebijakan dalam merancang strategi pembelajaran membaca yang efektif pada pendidikan dasar.
