Abstract

Film is a mass communication medium which, apart from being an audio-visual work of art, is also a very effective means of conveying messages. One film that is full of messages is "Cek Toko Sebelah" by Ernest Prakasa. This film tells the story of the reality of an ethnic Chinese family where one of the shop owner's children, who graduated from a foreign university, was entrusted with an inheritance to continue his father's shop business. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method. After sorting out which scenes show Chinese ethnic stereotypes, the data obtained is then analyzed through denotative and connotative aspects as well as myths. The results of the research show that there is a stereotype of Chinese ethnicity in the film "Cek Toko Sebelah" which indicates a stereotype of Chinese ethnicity as being stingy, arrogant and cunning. Apart from that, there are also stereotypes that refer to their culture, namely belief in the concept of hockey, conflict regarding interracial marriage, and their role and social class as traders. Stereotypical representations are demonstrated through verbal and non-verbal communication. The suggestion from this research is that other filmmakers can imitate the filmmakers of "Cek Toko Sebelah" in representing stereotypes circulating in society intelligently and entertainingly. So that it can create a climate of peace between ethnic groups which will further enrich Indonesia's cultural landscape.

Additional Information: Film merupakan salah satu media komunikasi massa yang selain sebagai sebuah karya seni audio visual, juga merupakan sarana penghantar pesan yang sangat efektif. Salah satu film yang sarat akan pesan adalah “Cek Toko Sebelah” karya Ernest Prakasa. Film ini mengisahkan tentang realitas keluarga etnis Tionghoa dimana salah satu anak pemilik toko yang merupakan lulusan universitas luar negeri, diserahi warisan untuk meneruskan usaha toko milik ayahnya. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode analisis semiotika Roland Barthes. Setelah memilah adegan-adegan mana saja yang menunjukkan stereotip etnis Tionghoa, selanjutnya data yang diperoleh dianalisis melalui aspek denotatif dan konotatif serta mitos. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat stereotip etnis Tionghoa dalam film “Cek Toko Sebelah” yang menandakan stereotip etnis Tionghoa sebagai etnis yang pelit, sombong dan licik. Selain itu terdapat pula stereotip yang mengacu kepada kultur mereka yaitu kepercayaan pada konsep hoki, pertentangan mengenai pernikahan antar rasial, dan peran serta kelas sosial mereka sebagai kaum pedagang. Representasi stereotip ditunjukkan melalui komunikasi verbal dan non-verbal. Saran dari penelitian ini adalah agar pembuat film lain dapat meniru pembuat film “Cek Toko Sebelah” dalam merepresentasikan stereotip yang beredar di masyarakat dengan cerdas dan menghibur. Sehingga dapat menciptakan iklim kedamaian antar etnis yang akan semakin memperkaya lanskap budaya Indonesia.
