Abstract
This research aims to determine the effectiveness of applying the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) method in improving the non-verbal communication skills of grade 1 autistic children at SKh Al Khairiyah Cilegon. This research used a Single Subject Research (SSR) design with three phases, baseline phase I (A1), intervention phase (B), and baseline phase II (B2). The research subject was a grade 1 autistic child who had difficulty communicating. Data was collected through observation and tests on target behavior, namely the use of picture cards to carry out non-verbal communication. The results of this study show that in baseline phase I (A1), the level of non-verbal communication skills was 25%. After administering intervention (B) using the PECS method, there was a significant increase with an average of 61,455%. This increase was maintained in baseline phase II (A2) with an average of 58,33%. These findings indicate that the PECS method can significantly improve the non-verbal communication skills of autistic children. Therefore, it can be concluded that the PECS method is effective in supporting the communication development of autistic children, especially at SKh Al Khairiyah Cilegon.
