Abstract

Research on weed diversity in taro beneng cultivation areas at various altitudes in Banten is essential for providing baseline data to support effective weed management strategies. Weed diversity is influenced by internal factors, such as adaptation mechanisms and reproductive strategies, as well as external factors, including environmental conditions, temperature, soil fertility, and altitude. This study was conducted from August to September 2024 and examined weed diversity in lowland (343 m a.s.l., Talaga Warna Village, Serang), midland (615 m a.s.l., Cinyurup Village, Pandeglang), and highland (761 m a.s.l., Kaduengang Village, Pandeglang) areas. Sampling was carried out using a purposive method with three plots per elevation zone. Field observations utilized various weed identification tools, including the PictureThis and Google Lens applications. Data analysis included calculations of Absolute and Relative Density, Frequency, Dominance, Importance Value Index (IVI), Summed Dominance Ratio (SDR), and the Shannon Diversity Index (H'). Results showed that Synedrella nodiflora had the highest density in the lowlands, Ageratum conyzoides in the midlands, and Vandellia diffusa in the highlands. The Shannon Diversity Index values were 0.88 (lowland), 1.89 (midland), and 2.68 (highland), indicating increasing weed diversity with altitude. These findings suggest that elevation significantly influences weed diversity, with higher altitudes supporting more diverse weed communities due to variations in climate and environmental conditions. This study underscores the importance of topography in shaping weed populations and provides valuable insights for site-specific weed management in taro beneng cultivation.
