Abstract
Social media is one of the popular cultures that has spread in society, with the largest number of users being dominated by teenagers who are still students. The preparation of this study aims to identify the relevance of the use of social media by high school students on cognitive learning outcomes in Sociology subjects. Research with a survey approach was conducted on 35 high school students in Tangerang district. The technique of selecting respondents was purposive by determining the criteria, namely high school students of class XI IPS who have studied Sociology subject matter about social groups and social problems. The technique of collecting data through a questionnaire. The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques and presented in tabulated data in the form of tables and diagrams to formulate conclusions. The results showed that 1) social media has been used by respondents to support the learning process in their schools; 2) respondents use social media to discuss, sh are information or seek information related to Sociology subject matter; 3) Sociology subject teachers utilize social media YouTube and WhatsApp in the learning process; 4) the results of the cognitive competency measurement test are in the sufficient cate gory; 5) the use of social media by respondents did not play a significant role in their cognitive competence.
