Abstract

The social media platform Instagram is a visual-based medium with artistic elements used by teenagers to present themselves. The background of this research problem is the low self-esteem among students, which creates opportunities for social comparison behavior regarding appearance with peers, celebrities/artist, and beauty influencers. This behavior impacts how students present themselves on Instagram and in their daily lives. This rasearch aims to determine the relationship between social comparison behavior concerning appearance and self-presentation of students on Instagram at SMA Negeri 3 Kota Serang. This research employs a quantitative correlational method. The population consists of 550 students from classes XII-1 to XII-13. A sample of 85 students was obtained through simple random sampling. The instruments used include a 16-item social comparison behavior questionnaire and a 19-item self-presentation scale. Data were analyzed using classical assumption tests, including normality, homogeneity, and linearity tests. Subsequently, hypothesis testing was conducted using Pearson's product-moment correlation test. The results of the hypothesis test using Pearson's product-moment correlation technique showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that H₁ is accepted and H₀ is rejected. The obtained correlation coefficient (r) is -0.601, and the R Square value is 0.362. It can be concluded that social comparison behavior regarding appearance has a significant negative relationship with students' self-presentation on Instagram at SMA Negeri 3 Kota Serang, involving comparisons of appearance with peers, celebrities/artist, and beauty influencers. Additionally, social comparison behavior contributes to self-presentation by 36.2%, while the remaining 63.8% is determined by other factors not examined in this research.

Additional Information: Media sosial Instagram merupakan media berbasis visual dengan elemen artistik yang digunakan remaja untuk mempresentasikan dirinya. Adapun masalah penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya self-esteem siswa yang memberi peluang untuk melakukan perilaku perbandingan sosial aspek penampilan dengan teman sebaya, selebgram/artis maupun beauty influencer yang berdampak pada bagaimana siswa mempresentasikan dirinya di Instagram dan kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara perilaku perbandingan sosial aspek penampilan dengan presentasi diri siswa pada media sosial Instagram di SMA Negeri 3 Kota Serang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif jenis korelasional. Populasi berjumlah 550 siswa kelas XII-1 s.d XII-13. Penarikan sampel dengan teknik simple random sampling diperoleh 85 sampel penelitian. Instrumen yang digunakan yaitu kuesioner skala perilaku perbandingan sosial 16 item dan skala presentasi diri 19 item. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji asumsi klasik diantaranya uji normalitas, uji homogenitas dan uji linieritas. Setelah itu, dilakukan pengujian hipotesis menggunakan uji korelasi sederhana pearson produci moment. Hasil uji hipotesis menggunakan teknik korelasi sederhana pearson product moment menunjukkan nilai signifikansi sebesar 0.000 < 0.05, artinya H₁ diterima dan Ho ditolak. Adapun nilai koefisien korelasi (r) yang diperoleh sebesar -0.601 dan R Square yang diperoleh sebesar 0.362. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa perilaku perbandingan sosial pada aspek penampilan berhubungan negatif secara signifikan dengan presentası diri siswa pada media sosial Instagram di SMA Negeri 3 Kota Serang yang melibatkan perbandingan penampilan dengan teman sebaya, selebgram/artis dan beauty influencer Selain itu, perilaku perbandingan sosial berkontribusi terhadap presentasi dırı sebesar 36.2% sedangkan sisanya sebesar 63.8% ditentukan oleh faktor lain yang tidak diteliti dalam penelitian ini.
