Abstract

Nickel is one of the metals used as a raw material for the production of industrial and transportation products. Indonesia is one of the largest sources of laterite nickel resources in the world. Generally, laterite nickel is divided into two types: limonite and saprolite. Limonite can be used as a raw material for producing cathodes for electric vehicle batteries, which are currently popular in the automotive industry. Low-grade nickel (limonite) is difficult to process using smelting or pyrometallurgy due to the iron content in limonite ore, which is around 35%, while Ni is approximately 1.3%–1.5%. As a result, limonite ore cannot be economically smelted and is instead processed using hydrometallurgy. Electrowinning, one of the purification methods, operates on the principle of electrolysis. Nickel in the solution is deposited as metallic nickel at the cathode. The aim of the research was to produce as much deposit as possible with a current efficiency of over 50%. The raw materials used were artificial solutions (nickel sulfate hexahydrate, iron (III) sulfate, and H₂SO₄) and limonite nickel PLS (pregnant leach solution). Both raw materials underwent a two-stage iron removal process, and the filtrate was used as the electrolyte for electrowinning. Electrowinning was conducted with variations in pH (4, 8, 12) and temperature (40°C, 50°C, 60°C). The results of electrowinning with the artificial solution at pH 4 and a temperature of 40°C achieved a current efficiency of 61.76% and a deposit mass of 0.0093 g, showing the best results. Limonite nickel PLS showed the best results at pH 4 and a temperature of 60°C, with a deposit mass of 0.0136 g and a current efficiency of 90.22%.

Additional Information: Nikel merupakan salah satu logam yang digunakan sebagai bahan dasar untuk membentuk produk-produk industri, dan transportasi. Indonesia merupakan salah satu sumber daya nikel laterit terbesar di dunia. Secara umum nikel laterit terbagi menjadi dua jenis yaitu limonit dan saprolit. Limonit dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku untuk membuat katoda baterai kendaraan listrik yang saat ini sedang popular dalam kalangan industri mobil. Nikel kadar rendah (limonit) sulit diproses dengan peleburan atau pirometalurgi karena kandungan besi pada bijih limonit yaitu 35% sedangkan Ni sekitar 1,3%–1,5% sehingga bijih limonit tidak dapat dilebur secara ekonomis, maka, bijih limonit diproses dengan cara hidrometalurgi. Electrowinning yang merupakan salah satu metode kemurnian menggunakan prinsip elektrolisis. Nikel dalam larutan diendapkan sebagai logam nikel di katoda. Tujuan penelitian adalah menghasilkan endapan sebanyak mungkin dengan efisiensi arus >50%. Bahan baku adalah larutan artificial (nikel sulfate hexahydrate, dan iron (III) sulfate, dan H2SO4) dan PLS nikel limonit. Kedua bahan baku dilakukan iron removal 2 stage dan filtratnya digunakan sebagai elektrolit pada electrowinning. Electrowinning dilakukan dengan variasi pH (4,8,12) dan temperatur (40ºC, 50ºC, 60ºC). Hasil electrowinning dengan larutan artificial pada pH 4 dan temperatur 40°C menghasilkan efisiensi arus 61,76% dan massa endapan 0,0093g menunjukkan hasil yang terbaik. PLS nikel limonit menunjukkan hasil terbaik pada pH 4 dan temperatur 60°C, dengan massa endapan 0,0136g dan efisiensi arus 90,22%.
